METAFOR is divided into 7 "work packages". Each of the "packages" is a set of tasks and deliverables which will be worked on by one or more partners.

Click on one of the following titles to see more information about each "work packages".

Coordinator(s):
  • University of Reading
Participants:
  • University of Reading

METAFOR project management provides consortium management, scientific and technical coordination of the project activities (networking, trans-national access, services and research) and assessment of progress and results.

Coordinator(s):
  • University of Reading
Participants:
  • BADC
  • CERFACS
  • IPSL
  • University of Reading
  • University of Manchester
  • UKMO
  • Meteo France
  • NMA
  • CLIMPACT
  • Princeton

The main aim of WP2 is to coordinate the definition of a Common Information Model (CIM) to describe both simulation data and the models that created that data.

The CIM will specifically target earth system models ranging from Numerical Weather Prediction Models to Global Climate Models, as well as related observational datasets. The resulting information will allow both modellers and users of the data (scientists, policy makers, private companies) to fully understand the nature and the provenance of conforming datasets.

The objective of WP3 is to provide content to services exposing the CIM (WP4) making it available to all partners and third parties alike. This will formally test the CIM and the services as well as give valuable information by practical experience for the revision of the CIM (WP2) and accompanying tools (WP5 and WP6). This objective leads to two types of tasks: production of the content and testing the content.

  • BADC
  • CNRS
  • MPG

Description of work: The main objective of the service component of WP4 is to provide the capacity for both project partners and third parties alike to have “one-stop-shop” access to simulation holdings at the project partners – informed by the Common Information Model (CIM).

Coordinator(s):
  • UKMO
Participants:
  • University of Reading
  • BADC
  • CERFACS
  • MPG
  • University of Manchester
  • UKMO

Description of work: The aim of WP5 is to develop a set of tools (“the CIM toolkit”) to locate, analyse, and manipulate information about climate models and data and, in some cases, the actual models and data themselves.

Coordinator(s):
  • MPG
Participants:
  • University of Reading
  • BADC
  • MPG
  • University of Manchester
  • UKMO
  • CNRS

Description of work: The aim of this work package is to produce software tools that can be used to actually create CIM content for use, primarily in WP3. This activity starts with identifying the tools required, and defining a methodology for constructing them, before proceeding to constructing the tools.

Description of work: WP7 will organise the wider impacts of the activities done within the project and the delivery of knowledge to the four user communities targeted by METAFOR: 1) climate science, 2) the IPCC WG2 Impacts groups, 3) private sector companies, institutions and branches of government involved in climate hazards and change and 4) the e-science community.
